How To Start a Natural Gas Grill

When the weather is nice, cooking outside with friends and family is one of our favorite activities. Whether you’re a seasoned grill master or experimenting with a new recipe, it’s important to know how to safely turn on your natural gas grill every time you start cooking. We’ve put together some quick tips to help you get started.

Here’s how to start a natural gas grill:

  1. Open the Lid: Before you turn any grill knobs, you’ll want to make sure the grill lid is open. This prevents gas from building up and helps keep you safe.
  2. Turn on the Gas: Locate your grill’s natural gas shut-off valve, which may be behind or beneath the grill. Inspect the natural gas hose for any cracks or wear. If the gas hose is intact, turn the shut-off valve from the closed position to the open position by rotating it a quarter turn parallel to the pipe. Natural gas is now flowing to your grill!
  3. Start the Fire: Turn on one burner and set it all the way to high. Depending on your grill, the burner will either self-ignite or you will need to press the ignition button to light. If the igniter fails to spark, try a long match or wand lighter for manual lighting. You should see a well-lit flame beneath the grill plates.
  4. All Burners On: Once the first burner is lit, turn all remaining burners to high.
  5. Heat Things Up: Close the lid to allow your grill to heat up. Your desired temperature is 500 degrees, which should take around 15 to 20 minutes for your grill to reach.
  6. Ready to Grill: Once your grill has reached 500 degrees, adjust the settings to your desired temperature. Now you’re ready to grill!

Follow these easy steps and you’ll be cooking with natural gas in no time. And don’t forget – once you’re done using your grill, make sure to turn off all burners and rotate the natural gas shut-off valve to the closed position. Enjoy grilling season!
