Understanding Your Natural Gas Plan: A Guide for New and Renewing Customers

Whether you just bought a home, are looking to renew your natural gas rate, or are just new to the deregulated natural gas market, natural gas plans and bills can be confusing.

Natural Gas Plans

Georgia is a deregulated natural gas market, meaning you have a choice of companies to provide your natural gas service. SCANA Energy makes choosing a provider easy by offering a variety of fixed and variable natural gas plans for both residential and commercial customers in Georgia.

Fixed Rate Plans

If you select a fixed rate plan, you are guaranteed a specific therm price for the duration of your selected plan. We offer 6-, 12-, 18-, 24-, and 36-month plan options so you can choose what works best for your situation. A fixed rate is a great way to keep your monthly natural gas bill predictable. However, a contract is required and an early termination fee will apply if you decide to change your service before the end of your contract.

SCANA Energy only offers fixed rate plans within certain zip codes. You can check our Service Area Map to see if your home qualifies.

Variable Rate Plans

With a variable rate plan, the therm price changes each month based on market conditions. Variable rate plans are a great option for those who only use natural gas in the winter, are in a temporary home, or who live where fixed rate plans are not available. While it makes it a bit harder to predict what your monthly natural gas bill will look like, variable rates offer you the choice to switch to a fixed rate plan or change providers whenever you need without fees.

Commercial Rate Plans

Looking for a natural gas provider for your business? SCANA Energy serves large and small businesses across Georgia, so you can make the best choice for your business. Plans can differ depending on business size, if your business uses more than 3,000 therms per year, you can request a custom quote or contact an account representative at 404.760.6295.

Whether you’re looking for flexibility or predictability, there is a rate plan option for you.

Rate Plan Renewal

Customers on a fixed rate plan receive notices 60 and 30 days before it’s time to renew. With SCANA Energy, natural gas rate renewal is easy, either visit your online account or call our customer care center at 1.877.467.2262 to learn about your therm price and rate plan options. Not sure when your fixed rate plan ends? Check out the plan at a glance section of your online account or the current charges section of your SCANA bill to see the exact end date.

Natural Gas Bills

You’ve signed up for service, now it’s time to learn how to read your natural gas bill. There’s more to a natural gas bill than just the price per therm, we will use a SCANA Energy bill as an example to help you read and interpret your natural gas bill.

Customer Information

At the top of each page of your natural gas bill, you’ll find the account holder’s name, service address, and account information along with the amount due.

Account Summary

When you think of a bill, this is the portion you likely think of. What you’ve paid and what you owe by when, as simple as that.

Usage Summary

A useful aspect of your natural gas bill is the ability to review your usage history. This gives you an idea of how much natural gas you use throughout the year. You can use your usage history to gauge what your gas bills will look like, especially if you’re on a fixed rate plan. To view more detailed usage information, SCANA Energy customers can sign into their online account.

Detailed Summary

On the third and final page of your SCANA Energy bill, you’ll find the current charges section, which lays out every aspect of your charges for that billing period. Here, you’ll find all the information you need to understand your bill’s total, but not all of it is intuitive for everyone.

A version of this section will be on all natural gas bills, regardless of provider, so let’s run through this what all of this means.

  • DDDC Dedicated Design Day Capacity (DDDC) is an estimation from Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) of the cost to deliver natural gas to a home or business on the coldest day of the year. It is used by AGL to determine your pass-through charge.
  • Meter Number This identifies the meter associated with your home or business’ natural gas delivery.
  • Billing Period You can see the dates used for this bill and the number of days in the billing period. If you’re confused by the amount of your natural gas bill vs how much natural gas you think you’ve used, make sure to check this and consider your usage during that period.
  • Gas Usage Calculation A simple equation is used to calculate your natural gas consumption. We subtract your previous meter reading from your current to get your usage for that billing period. This number is multiplied by your BTU Factor to get the number of therms you used.
  • BTU British Thermal Units (BTU) measure the amount of energy used to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. In short, it’s the energy required to produce heat.
  • Therm Therms are the actual energy supplied by the natural gas. These are calculated using the amount of heat energy stated in the BTUs multiplied by the amount of natural gas used.

Your total monthly charges are based on more than just your usage. Here’s a breakdown of the charges you’ll see on each bill.

  • Natural Gas Consumption Charge This is the part of your charges that is based on natural gas usage. It is the therms you used multiplied by your current therm price.
  • Customer Service Charge We charge a fixed fee each month in order to provide the quality of service you deserve. This covers the cost of servicing and maintaining your account.
  • AGL Pass-Through Charge This is a charge that all natural gas marketers collect on behalf of AGL for its services, such as gas delivery, pipeline maintenance, and meter readings. AGL determines this charge for every natural gas user in Georgia.
  • State and Local Taxes Georgia and United States law require that a sales tax be applied to your total bill.
