October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to honor that, SCANA Energy donated $5,000 to the Atlanta Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF). The foundation offers financial assistance to cancer patients in metro Atlanta so they can focus on what's important.

Since its foundation in 2001 by staff at Atlanta Cancer Care, ACCF has worked to alleviate some of the financial burdens that come with cancer care for patients and families in metro Atlanta. Financial assistance goes to patients being treated in Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Newton, Paulding, Rockdale, and Walton counties. The foundation also supports cancer education and research in the area.

Last year, ACCF provided more than $320,000 to more than 1,000 cancer patients and their families in metro Atlanta. Patients used these funds to help with their transportation costs, rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, and treatment costs. The financial aid was also used to purchase medical equipment not covered by insurance and lymphedema garments (compression items that help alleviate symptoms of lymphedema).
