SCANA ENERGY HOSTS STUDENTS FROM TITLE 1 SCHOOLS AT MERCEDES-BENZ STADIUM THROUGH HOMEWORK CENTERS PROGRAM

More than 275 students to participate in annual Homework Centers Field Day with Falcons Legends and Atlanta United Players

ATLANTA (March 29, 2023) - Atlanta Falcons Legends and Atlanta United Alumni will be at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) Thursday, March 30 for a day of games, contests, and football and soccer drills for SCANA Energy Homework Center students.

"We’re excited to host, along with our partners at the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United, the 2nd annual Field Day for students in the SCANA sponsored Homework Centers,” said Kimberly Penz, Director of Marketing and Social Impact for SCANA Energy. “We can’t wait to welcome these students back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to meet players and cheerleaders from both teams and have some great food and fun. One hundred and seventy students attended last year’s event and SCANA looks forward to building on that big success this month.

The SCANA Energy Homework Centers provide secure, supervised environments where students in grades two through five spend time after school working on homework assignments, developing study skills, and engaging in enrichment activities. Local schools host the centers and staff them with certified teachers from each school. For each Homework Center, SCANA Energy funds a 28-week budget that covers the cost of two to four certified teachers and snacks, supplies, and student incentives for up to 45 students. 

Since launching in 1999, SCANA Energy Homework Centers have grown to serve more than 6,000 students at 56 Title I schools in 12 Georgia counties. For this school year, SCANA expanded the program again by opening a 10th center. Data from previous years show that at least 75 percent of students improved their reading and math levels each year, with some schools even seeing 100 percent of students improving. 

“The best thing about the Homework Center is learning new things because learning new things can get you a lot of places in life,” said one young participant.

Another student added: “I like the Homework Center because we get to learn new things in fun ways. And sometimes we don't just do work all the time; sometimes people come over to the after-school program and share fun activities with us. I also like working in groups with my friends.”

Parents have also seen the benefits of SCANA Homework Centers. “The program provides students with additional supports outside of the of the classroom that help strengthen their core knowledge and increase their confidence,” one parent said.

According to another parent, “The best thing about the SCANA Energy Homework Center this year is my kids love to have more time at school to work on their homework with teachers and friends.”
