Which Fixed-Rate Gas Plan Is Right for You? A Look at Our Options

When looking for the best natural gas rates in Georgia, shoppers can get overwhelmed by all the options available. The good news is that the variety of options means there’s a natural gas rate plan to fit every home. We’re here to break down term lengths, rate types, discounts, and what’s included in your natural gas plan so you can find your perfect rate plan.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A FIXED-RATE PLAN: 01 How long do you plan to live in this home? 02 Do you use natural gas year-round? 03 Are there any discounts offered that you qualify for? 04 Would you like to reduce your carbon footpring?

Natural gas plan fixed term lengths for everyone.

A fixed-rate natural gas plan is exactly what it sounds like — a contract that guarantees your price per therm at a property for a set amount of time. SCANA Energy offers 5 fixed rate term lengths (6, 12, 18, 24, or 36 months) for many homes and businesses in the metro Atlanta area. So, how do you decide which plan is right for you? It really comes down to price, the market, and your circumstances.

At first glance, the rate plans with lower price per therm seem like the best natural gas rates in Georgia. However, that’s not always going to be the best choice for you. The lowest price at the time isn’t necessarily a low price in general. In Georgia, natural gas prices change each month and depend on a variety of factors. When prices are higher, do some research on how the natural gas market is trending. You may want to go for a shorter term length and hope prices are lower when you renew. On the other hand, when prices are low, it’s a good idea to lock in a low rate for longer.

Other things to consider are your current living situation and your natural gas usage. How long are you planning to stay in your current home? Do you use natural gas all year or only for heat in the winter? If you plan to move in the next few years, you should look at a term length that matches up with your future plans. If you only use gas in the winter, you can join the many Georgians who turn their gas service on in the fall and sign up for a 6-month fixed rate plan to get them through the cool weather.

Natural gas discounts for seniors.

There are even more options for those over the age of 65. You can sign up for SCANA Energy’s Senior Plan or Senior Advantage Plan. If your average annual gas usage is 720 therms or more, the Senior Plan might be the right choice for you. The Senior Plan includes a 3¢-per-therm discount on your natural gas rate plan, plus a 20¢ discount on your monthly customer service charge. If your average annual gas usage is less than 720 therms, the Senior Advantage Plan might be a better call. This plan includes a $2 discount on your monthly customer service charge, saving you $24 each year. Take a look at your gas usage and current prices to determine which natural gas plan is the best for you.

You may also qualify for an additional discount from Atlanta Gas Light. Once your natural gas plan has been activated (in your name), income-eligible seniors may qualify for up to $14 off your monthly Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) Pass-Through Charge. This discount is managed by AGL and approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, not SCANA Energy, but you can find the application to print and mail to AGL on our website.

Military discounts for active, reserve, retired, and disabled service members.

SCANA Energy also offers an exclusive discount for military service members. Active members, military reserve, retired service members, disabled service members, and military spouses qualify for a 3¢-cent-per-therm discount on your natural gas rate plan.

Carbon-neutral natural gas rate plans for the environmentally conscious.

Looking for more from your natural gas plan? SCANA Energy offers carbon-neutral versions of all of our published natural gas rate plans. You can shrink your carbon footprint for just a few additional cents per therm. All of the extra income from your carbon-neutral gas plan is contributed to carbon offset projects that work to keep our land, air, and energy clean. This means you’ll be aiding projects focused on reforestation, methane capture, wind farms, and more. The best part? The per therm adder means that you’re offsetting your personal usage rather than paying the same set fee as someone who uses more natural gas than you do.

What is a natural gas rate plan?

Your rate plan is the price you’ll pay your natural gas provider for your gas usage. However, your natural gas bill includes more than just usage. There are also charges related to the delivery of gas to your home, the work your natural gas provider does to keep up your plan, and taxes. We have already broken down every aspect of your rate plan so there’s no confusion after you sign up.
