Moving? You need this new home checklist

From unpacking boxes to moving your gas service, getting things set in your new place is a lot of work. To help, we’ve created a moving checklist to use as you make your new house a home.

Now let’s break down those steps and more with our favorite packing and moving tips. After all, moving into a new home is a big deal, and we want you to be prepared.

1. Keep Getting Mail: Be sure to submit your change of address to the post office. You don’t want to miss important bank account updates, credit card statements, or utility bills.

2. Stay Connected: Don't worry about the cost of moving your gas meter, that doesn't come with you. However, your natural gas service can! SCANA Energy makes it easy to set up or move your gas plan; check our service area map to see if we service your new area. If you're moving within their service area, natural gas, cable, and internet providers can usually transfer service to your new home with ease.

3. Pack to Unpack: We know it sounds crazy, but pack an “unpacking” box. Put tools, scissors, plastic bags, drop cloths, and whatever else you might need for home setup in one box for easy access.

4. Fresh and Clean: Clean up the inside and outside of your new home before moving anything in. After all, cleaning around your furniture would be a hassle. Don’t forget to clean your natural gas range and natural gas oven while you’re at it.

5. Lock It Down: Before moving in, consider changing the locks on all doors. It’s also a good idea to make copies of your keys for trusted relatives or neighbors to use if needed.

6. Get Familiar: Take a tour of your new home to familiarize yourself with the plumbing, natural gas and electric appliances. Knowing what to do in case of a natural gas leak or electrical problem can save time and money. 

7. Prepare Yourself: Having an emergency plan may sound scary, but it’s necessary for your family. Start with identifying emergency exits and designated meeting places outside your home. Then, install appropriate safety detectors to ensure your home is safe.

8. Meet & Greet: Introduce yourself to your new neighbors. Not only will you make friends, you’ll also learn about trash schedules, recycling day, the homeowners association and any other tips to help you fit in seamlessly. 

9. Celebrate: It's time to schedule your housewarming party! You want to connect to your new neighbors while keeping old friendships alive during your move. Don’t wait too long to show off your new home — celebrate your hard work.
