Fueling the next generation through homework centers

For more than 25 years, SCANA Energy has sponsored homework centers at Title 1 elementary schools in the metro Atlanta area. The program has grown over the years to what it is today – an after-school program at ten elementary schools serving second- through fifth-grade students.

The SCANA Energy Homework Centers are typically held twice a week with three staff teachers working with around 30 students. This program is unique in that SCANA Energy doesn’t set the curriculum. Individual schools and students have individual needs, so we work with the teachers to provide what their students need to succeed. The homework centers also provide snacks and a safe space for students to spend time after school.

 Over the 2024–2025 school year, students participating in the SCANA Energy Homework Centers demonstrated strong and consistent academic progress. Many programs reported improvement rates in math and reading ranging from 80% to as high as 100%. Most students either improved or maintained their performance, while also gaining confidence, developing better study habits, and engaging more positively in school. Parent feedback reinforces these results, with more than 80% reporting noticeable improvements in their child’s academic performance and attitude.

In addition to academic assistance, the SCANA Energy Homework Centers provide fun enrichment opportunities with our partners. Whether it’s reading with an Atlanta Dream player, doing a science project with a Georgia Tech student, or improving with someone from Alliance Theatre, the students are sure to have fun while learning something new.

Each school year ends with a celebration of the students’ hard work – Field Day at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Every single SCANA Energy Homework Center student and teacher takes a bus to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to spend a morning playing games and running drills with Atlanta United and Falcons Legends followed by lunch and awards. Two students from each school are presented awards – one for academic improvement and another that changes year to year. This event started in 2020 and keeps getting better and better.
