  • Be sure to fill out change of address order forms at the post office.
  • Fill out an IRS change of address form.
  • Make arrangements with a moving company or reserve a rental truck. Be sure to get several quotes and look for a company that is fully insured and bonded. Read additional moving tips from SCANA.
  • Make travel arrangements, if necessary, with airlines, buses, car rental agencies and hotels.
  • Obtain medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories. Ask your doctor and dentist for referrals and be sure to transfer your prescriptions. Electronic records may make this unnecessary, but it's best to be sure.
  • Set up a bank and checking account in your new city.
  • Self employed? Check into the laws and requirements of your new city regarding home-based businesses, professional accreditation, business licenses and other self employment labor laws
  • Take inventory of your belongings before they're packed, in case you need to file an insurance claim. Document your belongings with pictures or videotape. Record serial numbers of electronic equipment.
