May 8, 2003, Atlanta, GA - SCANA Energy's Homework Center at Mt. Olive Elementary in East Point is holding its first Teacher-Student Recognition Day on Thursday, May 15. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. in the media center at 3353 Mt. Olive Road. Special guest and V-103 radio personality "The Magic Man" will speak about the importance of literacy and teambuilding as well as hand out prizes and sign autographs.
Now in its fourth year of operation at Mt. Olive, the SCANA Energy Homework Center will recognize the accomplishments of its teachers, Joyce Alexander and Brenda Dasent, as well as the academic achievements of its most improved students. "As part of SCANA Energy's ongoing commitment to the communities we serve in Georgia, we are proud to continue our support of the educational efforts in Atlanta and are pleased to recognize the teachers and students of Mt. Olive with this extraordinary day," said George Devlin, vice president and general manager of SCANA Energy.
SCANA Energy Homework Centers provide a safe and structured study environment where students can complete their class assignments and learn proper study skills. In addition to two certified teachers, SCANA Energy also provides funds for supplemental snacks and student incentives. At Mt. Olive Elementary, the homework center operates from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The center serves 22 third and fourth grade students.
SCANA Energy currently sponsors six homework centers in Georgia. The company adopted the award-winning program from its South Carolina-based parent company, SCANA Corporation. SCANA also operates homework centers in North Carolina.
